The last round of the Icelandic Chess Championship promises to bring more drama. Before the last round, GM’s Johann Hjartarson and Hedinn Steingrimsson lead the tournament with 7,5 out of 10. They will both have the black pieces in the last round though Johann will have on paper the easier pairing againt the bottom seed.
In the 10th round Johann beat Orn Leo Johannsson on the white side of a Frenh defence. Johann won a pawn in the middlegame and black failed to create enough play though he put up a good fight.
Hedinn had a much easier day as his opponent Hjorvar Steinn Gretarsson had to withdraw due to illness.
Bragi Thorfinnsson fell a point behind the leaders and missed out on a GM norm when he faced fellow IM Gudmundur Kjartansson. After struggling in the tournament Gudmundur put on a nice display in this game.
Jon Viktor Gunnarsson is also a point behind after drawing against Einar Hjalti Jensson.
In the remaining games Bjorn Thorfinnsson stopped the streaking Gudmundur Gislason while David Kjartansson beat Johann Ingvason.
